question about hashtags & friendica.au
hi again @Marek π¦πΊπ©πͺ @Friendly Koala Marek
recently, in friendica.au/display/f3535bde-β¦ i mentioned this:
if you don't mind, i'd like to now mention an additional issue that troubles me with my new account here. i prolly would have raised this with you another day anyway, except i now wonder if it might also be another part of a larger problem with the server?the same day i created this account i tediously manually Followed all the numerous hashtags i follow [~100] & then created my custom Channels for those tags. for reasons i still don't yet understand, in this account those tags searches [& thus also the Channels] often fetch nothing, or otherwise much less than my identically-setup current daily friendica, friendica.opensocial.space/pro⦠.
the ever-helpful owner/admin of my current default/daily fedi friendica.opensocial.space, @Raroun, recently gave me some most sombre info, when responding to my enquiry about recent instance uptime & latency issues...
friendica.opensocial.space/disβ¦
Sorry for the timeouts β we're literally killing ourselves keeping this running on volunteer power.
Just a heads up though: following tons of hashtags needs serious server muscle. If friendica.au is also small, you might hit the same limits there. It's not you, it's just resource-heavy for indie instances.
No hard feelings if you need to switch, but wanted to set expectations realistically!
previously i had no idea at all of this reality, & it immediately made me feel bad in that all this time i had been inadvertently causing problems for admins on various Friendica instances i had used, which ofc is the last thing i would want.
i know nothing at all about the "behind-the-curtain" magic that goes on in server databases & code, but merely from a few years of ignorant end-user UX i've learned that Masto & Sharkey somehow seem to accommodate my large hashtag-following with less latency / reliability problems than on Friendica. now that Raroun has informed me of the serious HW implications of me following large numbers of hashtags in my Friendica accounts, in all good conscience i don't see how i could morally continue my Friendica accounts, knowing i'm causing him & you etc undue problems.
so what began with my earlier enquiry to you about my present FriendicaAU "tags searches [& thus also the Channels] often fetch nothing, or otherwise much less than my identically-setup current daily friendica" friendica.opensocial.space problem, soon became a realisation that unless an instance has "serious server muscle", such an outcome is unavoidable. my assumption here is that as a brand new instance your current HW specs might not be "serious server muscle", which if so my ongoing account might just frustrate both of us, with my tag searches/following yielding little or nothing, but the effort of which causing you much grief in server operation.
i'd really appreciate your thoughts here on what i've written. for my part, i shan't do anything else tonight, & will just sleep on it, but tomorrow i might need to abandon my new account, indeed maybe all my Friendica accounts, unless somehow i've badly misunderstood the situation.
thank you.
@Friendly KoalaAre your other accounts all Friendica instances, or others as well?
mostly friendicas, indeed all my recent test posts were sent only to my other friendicas, whereas iirc maybe one or two of my original tests, the other day, were also sent to my Masto account.make a difference whether you use a direct mention or the Messages menu?
pls indulge me here. atm it's late & i'm tired, quite fuzzy, & i'm struggling to grasp what each option is that you're asking. immediately after i first registered this new account, i tried various combos of test-post creation, but by now there's too much water under the bridge for me to remember clearly what's what. otoh my most recent test-posts, like the one at the top of this thread, i created simply by clicking the "New Post" button at top rhs corner of the Network page, then in the composition drafting box i typed in the account addresses i wanted to send to. does that make sense?mentioning someone in a private message does not work
if you mean this:then not only did it not work for me here, but iirc it rarely or maybe even never worked for me in any of my other friendicas, both still-active ones, & older ones now deleted. tbh i always found it so unreliable as to not really bothering any more with it... maybe it's a general friendica code bug?
sending a direct message using the Messages menu
atm it's 90' after midnight, but late yesterday morning you sent me this DM......& i was able to reply to you, so i presume this means we can confidently say that this specific component is working well?
if you don't mind, i'd like to now mention an additional issue that troubles me with my new account here. i prolly would have raised this with you another day anyway, except i now wonder if it might also be another part of a larger problem with the server?
the same day i created this account i tediously manually Followed all the numerous hashtags i follow [~100] & then created my custom Channels for those tags. for reasons i still don't yet understand, in this account those tags searches [& thus also the Channels] often fetch nothing, or otherwise much less than my identically-setup current daily friendica, @Droppie [opensoc] . this disappointment might be entirely unrelated, but i thought to mention it here just in case it might be another facet of some broader issue with your server's current networking / fediversing...?
off to bed now, bye.

in reply to Droppie • • •Absolutely no need to feel bad. Sharkey had a similiar thing with antennas way back.
And Friendica is just not very optimzed when it comes to filters like hashtags.

this bit is prolly specific to Marek; as you continue settling down your new instance, if there's any particular tests or whatever that you'd like some random user to try/do for you, pls feel free to ping me at my @Droppie & i'll be most happy to log back in & do it for you.
thank you both for your excellent helpfulness & great instances!
