Earlier this week I unsubscribed from #1Password and moved to #Bitwarden... due to their donation of 300k to DHH's #Omarchy.
I made sure to let them know about the reason, so that hopefully the company would notice those kind of decisions have an impact.
Day one I got messages from their AI system.
But today I got a response by a real human at 1Password (or so it appears).
If you are curious about the company's official response to the backlash, check out the screenshot (and/or #AltText)

Expecting a handcrafted letter from customer support is main character syndrom.
On the plus side: This letter exists, so there were some teams involved and it is itself a sign that they are reacting.
For whatever consequence...

reddit.com/r/degoogle/comments…
I was almost in on Bitwarden but as I recall they use AWS on the backend (so does 1P) and I am also trying to extricate from AWS services (not realistic, I know). I explored self-hosting Bitwarden/Vaultwarden but then you are reliant on Bitwarden the company to keep producing a good client (which you’re using for free). Just as I was testing it, this happened:
fastcompany.com/91542655/bitwa…
And that shadiness turned me off.
Right now I like the looks of @aliasvault and @passbolt, both of which can be self-hosted. I’m waiting for each to mature a bit as they don’t quite have all the features I need personally.
The good news is there are more options in this space than a year ago! It’s not just 1P and LastPass and Bitwarden. 😁

The BW vault is cached locally, so you can access and update passwords without a connection, then the next time that device connects it will sync its vault to the central server.

For example, personally, I don't like KeePassXC, but I like KeePass 2. For others, it's the opposite, and non-XC KeePass 1 plus other third-party implementations are available for download, too. I think it's a massive plus of the KeePasses that I'm not tied to one program using its own file format that nothing else uses, and especially not a mothership in The Cloud® that holds my passwords hostage.

Which is (and i say this positively, not nihilistically) the best kind of response i would expect from a company of that size.

I’m lucky to have no Android or Windows devices, so this was easy for me. I don’t envy people now faced with choosing a new password manager.

Hearing a lot of "___ is better, I'm moving here..." in these replies. May help to keep in mind the following:
Proton has a history. They don't explicitly back Trump and the alt-right, but they don't denounce fascism either. There's an old country song: "you got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything..." (But you don't have to take my word for it: medium.com/@ovenplayer/does-pr… )
KeePass XC, and I quote: "If our AI policy toppled your trust in us, ask yourself why you trusted us (or anyone) in the first place." They use LLM contributions in their work. Don't like it? Don't use it. (Source: keepassxc.org/blog/2025-11-09-… )
Bitwarden has been taken over last year by venture capitalists seeking to slopify it with AI, cull features, raise prices, and if they didn't get caught, end free service without a single press release. (Want a receipt? blog.ppb1701.com/the-quiet-ren… ) Vaultwarden is still better (security is as good as your own host) but I'd consider Bitwarden to be the next LastPass waiting to happen if the asshat CEO doesn't flip it for profit first.
I don't have a good answer of who to choose in this case. Just want to air the past dirty laundry from possible password manager refugees who may have been burned before (see LastPass's fall from prominence) and think another cloud based option will protect their secrets with better values.
TL;DR: There isn't anyone seemingly who want to stand against fascism overtly. If you jump, you may need to jump again. And again. And again...
