What does Thumb Down mean?

!Friendica Support
How should we use the Thumbs Down reaction emoji? To express our feelings about the content of the post (eg. oh god what has Trump done now) or to condemm the post itself as spam or inappropriate?

I've been afraid to use this thumbs down, but there are a lot of valuable posts I don't want to give a thumbs up to.

Are there any consequences to posts getting thumbs down i.e. are they flagged for moderator attention?

It is weird that you can both "Like" and "Dislike" a post, you'd think they should cancel each other

Just stumbled over this by chance @Random Penguin.

Can't see that consideration at all. Quiet a narrow and binary point of view.
This simply depends on the context, on what the text in the answer or post says.
Making it canceling each other out is reducing the bandwith of options, a real loss without need by all means.
(In my humble opinion.)

Since there is no ranking (as has been pointed out), downvoting a post doesn't make any sense on Friendica. I understand the "dislike" button to signal disapproval (of the post itself, not the content). I have never used it before but I suppose I would use it to mark posts that are spam, possible scams or violations of my server's ToS.

In that context, simultaneously liking and disliking a post would be like saying "I agree with what you say, but this has no place here", maybe? But that would be very ambiguous and likely misunderstood.

Personally, if I dislike a post, I simply prefer to not interact with it at all. As a poster, if someone disagrees with me I would always prefer silence or constructive criticism over a dislike.

@Marek
Stumbled over this kinda old post cause I was searching for the reference on "voting".
I was in need for some links and was about to use\implement the idea.

As you can see, in part it can be used for "public" voting in posts and answers if you predefine the meaning of the thumsUp\thumbsDown options.

For me a classical swiss knife friendican option and implementation:

@Script Kiddie
You mean you have to be Michelangelo to be able to use mentions in a coherent manner instead of asking 5 profiles one question, just to than turn around and go on destroying a post and proposal?
Sounds like eating pizza or not eating pizza wasn't the question.
